About gameengines.io
Why this exists
Choosing a game engine is one of the most consequential decisions a game developer makes. Yet most comparison content online is either outdated, biased by sponsorships, or buried in 45-minute YouTube videos.
gameengines.io is different. We're an independent, data-driven comparison resource with structured data and honest analysis.
What we track
Every engine in our database is evaluated across a consistent schema:
- Technical capabilities - languages, 2D/3D support, rendering, physics
- Platform support - desktop, mobile, web, console (native vs middleware)
- Business model - licensing, cost, revenue share
- Ecosystem - asset stores, community size, documentation quality
- AI compatibility - how well the engine works with AI coding assistants
AI-Friendly rating
We're the first comparison site to rate engines on AI compatibility - how well they work with tools like GitHub Copilot, Claude, and ChatGPT. Engines with text-based scene files, simple scripting languages, and good documentation score higher.
Methodology
All data is manually verified against official documentation and release notes. We update engine profiles within 2 weeks of major releases. Our comparison table is generated from structured JSON data, ensuring consistency across all pages.
